Lasik?

So everyone, who's considered it? who's had it? Do you love not fumbling around to find your glasses? I just got checked out, and it looks like I'm a perfect candidate....I have a tentative appointment on April 17th, and pretty excited about it. Thoughts?

the idea is very frightening. I just can't trust doctors, and having some doctor laser-ing my eyeballs is just too friggin unbearable!
I keep imagining "Final Destination" scenes when I think about it.

One day I'll try it, tho I can understand
      your distrust of doctors,
I've felt that way since my circumcision

hello...i just had it done last week. it was a life decision. 18 years of contacts... no more!!
i had it done with a great doctor, the latest technology.. little more expensive, but i would rather pay..
and it comes with life time guarantee... my eyes are still healing a bit. my sight is 20/15, so better then 20/20.
the surgery was a trip, quite fast. the minute i got up from the cahir, i could seeeee....***

I know many people who have had this surgery and are thrilled with the results. I do have ever, have a friend, who it did not work out for. She had slight double vision constantly, this was like in 99 though so maybe it was not perfected back then.

I'm a good candidate too ... and I'm a big ol' chicken!!! I'm still thinking about it ... doctors seem to say things like "I've never seen this before" and "Oops" a little to often when I visit them ... I don't want to hear that when it comes to my vision! But I'd really like it done ... but it makes me nervous ... but, ummm ... my sister had it done, and had a lot of problems. She did say that she wished she hadn't done it, but she had some seriously dry eyes, and did sanding and sheet rock work the day before she had it done ... *HELLO*!!! WTF were you thinking ... I know a couple other people that have done it and just rave about it ... obviously, I'm still totall 100% on the fence, bwuahaha!

        it doesn't hurt {just about 5minutes on each eye}
and the whole experience with the machine is an interesting trip. it is amazing to see what humans can invent. smart sexy machines...to create miracles... what is really important i think is to be qualified for the surgery. the doctor told me that 15% people do not qualify. he said that over the years they learned who is not good for the surgery.....

"inheritance money"?! Jesus. How much does it cost in the US, anyway?

There are two clinics performing Lasiks in my own city and the surgery for myopia is, according to www.xe.com , 850 US dollars. The doctor is Italian, and apparently really good.

A friend of a friend had it done about a year ago, and she's been "glasses-free" since, with no prior complications.

You people should consider looking for clinics world-wide, if it's too expensive. Especially for this kind of surgery, that doesn't require any hospitalization. It's done in a few minutes.

Mine is costing about $4300, all tolled....yeah, expensive! If I had a passport, I'd be all over it. Okay, thats a lie. I don't really want to miss work, or travel to have a surgery. The clinic is about 2-3 miles from my house, and my friend will be driving me. MUCH easier to deal with. I do wonder how much it is in BC, but I can't imagine the savings to be that much, considering I'd have to take a week off from work to drive my ass up there, and then gas on top of it. Oh yeah, and I don't have a passport.(Yet! I'm working on it, I swear!)

          UPDATE!

Wow! I can see! No glasses, no contacts, no complications. It's incredible, REALLY INCREDIBLE! 15 years of glasses, and no more! *woooohoooo*

So now that you guys have better than perfect vision and no longer need glasses, do we have to kick you out of this tribe?

Seriously, congrats to you two! =)

So what makes for a bad candidate? I've tried contacts and they don't really work because my eyeballs are too flat. I know that contacts come in different curvatures and not even the flattest will stick properly. I wonder if that would complicate my candidacy for Lasik?

generally the thing that affects candidacy the most is the thickness of the cornea - most places will do a free evaluation, so go check it out!

Congratulations!!! Perhaps you could describe the procedure a little bit for us curious bespectacled folks out here.

the procedure was really easy! I was in an out of the office on the day of surgery in about an hour and a half.

they had to recheck all my prescriptions and thickness of cornea, etc, the morning of the surgery. then i waited in the office until he called me up. I laid down on this chair, similar to a dentist chair, and they had already put numbing drops in my eyes. they popped in something to keep the lid open, and then another something to keep the eyeball in place. i had to "keep looking at the blinking orange dot! look at the center of the dot!" i saw the dot go blurrier, and i believe thats when they peeled back the top layer of the cornea. Within about 1-2 minutes, the first eye was done. They did the other eye, then I sat up from the chair, and I could READ THE POSTER ON THE WALL!! WOAH! hadn't had that feeling in a loooooong time. They tested my vision, and I have a follow up appointment in a few weeks.

I was already starting to save money, and had almost three quarters of the sum, when I got the idea to do a little more research on the subject, and found some article on the net that said about 40% of people who have had lasiks last year in the US(might be 2006) have had some serious complications afterwards-like really dry eyes, double or triple vision, hyper-sensitivity to light etc. and I totally freaked out, and spent the money on clothes and cosmetic products..."laughs"

Seriously, now, they all say they don't know the long-term effects of the surgery-even if it succeeds. I mean, they've only been doing these kind of procedures for what?-10, 15 years?

And anyway, I would've had to wait till next year, 'cause you have to be at least 20 to get it done.

Meanwhile, my myopia is getting worse and worse. If I would've had a milder form-like no more than -1, I wouldn't have even considered lasiks, cause with -1 you can see the surroundings pretty well, if you go out swimming in a lake, for instance, you can admire the hills, and all that. But with -2.5, all you see are some blurry, green spots.

And contact lenses are just as risky as the lasiks, especially since I live in a very dusty, polluted city, and the risk of infections is very high.

All in all, if my myopia keeps getting worse, in a few years, I'll be forced to have the lasik. I mean, I don't wanna end up wearing lenses the size of jar glass.
I've decided to suck it in until I finish college, anyways. Just in case I'll go blind, I'll have a profession.lol

And..didn't wanna worry you, or anything. If you haven't had any complications yet, chances are you won't be having any in the future, either.
